From the story by Henry James Based on a novel by Henry James, the play is set in 1895 and follows the fortunes of Henry Jarvis, an American academic who is researching the life and work of Jeffrey Aspern, a great American poet of the early 19th century. Jarvis discovers that Juliana Bordereau, who as a young woman had an affair with Aspern, is still alive and living in Venice. He goes there and manages to become a lodger in Juliana's house, which she shares with her niece, Tina. Jarvis works his charms on Tina, who gradually falls in love with him and reveals that Juliana has a trunk full of love letters from Aspern. But Juliana refuses to let Jarvis see them. Will Jarvis be able to prise them away from the old lady? The box office will open for bookings in May 2013
